Are you passionate about fair and affordable housing? Do you champion Columbia’s early values of integration and access to housing for anyone who wishes to live here? Put your passion to work by joining the Board of Directors of Columbia Housing Center. We are currently recruiting new board members to help steer the organization toward a sustainable future, meet the needs of people seeking housing in Howard County, MD, and ensure the organization has adequate resources to advance its mission. The organization is led by an effective executive director and dedicated support staff, committed to excellence and service.

This is a great opportunity for community members to contribute to the great impact Columbia Housing Center is having on the Howard County community. Currently, we have opened up opportunities for 5 NEW board members with expertise in the following areas:

  • Financial Management or Accounting
  • Marketing and Community Outreach
  • Fundraising (individual and corporate donors/partners)
  • Housing policies, programs, and/or legislation
  • Strategic Planning/Business Plans
  • Law (especially zoning, fair housing, or real estate law)

We are especially interested in finding board members who currently rent their homes or have lived experience as a tenant in Howard County during the past 5 years. We are actively seeking candidates who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and/or have a disability to help build a diverse team with a rich variety of life experiences.

The Columbia Housing Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is established to promote racial and ethnic integration and diversity in Columbia, Maryland through housing advisory services, community outreach and advocacy, and educational programming. We launched our affirmative marketing housing referral program in 2022, and have now expanded to offer a rent subsidy program for students at Howard Community College and a housing search case management program for Housing Choice Voucher holders. This rapid growth has increased our operating budget significantly, creating a need to develop new policies and procedures, new fundraising opportunities, and work toward creation of a new strategic plan in the next 1-2 years.

Board terms are two years each with a three term limit. Meetings are held monthly from 9:30 - 11 am on the fourth Thursday of the month. New board member terms will begin in January 2025.
