ACS offers a variety of education and training programs designed to help our members meet the mission of their organization. Joan Driessen serves as Coordinator and volunteers serve on an Education and Training Committee that oversees the development of these programs and reports to the ACS Board of Directors.

General Membership Meetings
These free meetings are held eight times per year on the third Wednesday of the month. While planned for our members, these meetings are open to the public.
Community leaders present information on topics ranging from education to aging, health, intergenerational needs, and housing. These gatherings frequently include grant announcements, professional openings and other networking opportunities.
ACS also hosts annual meetings with the County Executive and Legislature.

Training Sessions
These skill development sessions are designed to support the non-profit staff, boards and volunteers in fulfilling their responsibilities effectively, creatively and efficiently. Past training series have focused on marketing, fundraising, and supervision. Coming in September & October 3-part series - Cultural Connections Series
Back by popular demand the ACS First-time Managers Series.
This year-long series helps newly promoted managers and new hires learn to supervise, hire, present, manage, motivate and evaluate.

Back-Office Group
These meetings offer hands-on demonstrations and discussion of new technology and ways to streamline operations. The informal setting is ideal for sharing ideas and resources, and networking with colleagues experiencing similar challenges. Topics for discussion are participant driven, and meetings are open to all ACS members. Recent topics have included open source technology, donor management databases, DIY accounting software, organizational Facebook pages, blogs, and RSS feeds.- September 29: More Google Tools
Board Development Programs
ACS is committed to supporting the important role that Boards play in realizing the missions of the organizations they serve through our Board Development Programs.
- Board Development Institute offers a series of specialized on-site training sessions that can be best delivered during Board meetings or retreats. These 30-60 minute presentations are available in the areas of governance, fundraising, strategic planning, organization oversight and succession planning. They are designed to ensure that all Board Members are well-grounded in the skills they need to be maximally effective.
- The Board Bank, a joint effort of The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, the Association of Community Services, and Leadership Howard County, connects individuals with volunteer leadership positions on local non-profit and governmental boards expressing a need for their specific skills, talents and interests. Information from the forms below will be used to help make the match between interested individuals and organizations.
- The Gavel Group, sponsored by ACS, meets quarterly providing Board Presidents with a forum in which to share their experiences as well as offering valuable educational and networking opportunities.
