Hard to believe but the Audrey Robbins Humanitarian Awards are June 16.

One week before celebrating this year’s honorees we recall our final group of past winners from the past 35 years. This week: 1982: Priscilla Hart, Ho.Co. Rape Crisis Center; 1981: Mae Ruth Seidel, FISH of Howard County; 1980: Hans Marchand,  Womanscope,  1979:  Ann Wicke, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; 1978:  Mary Alice Walker, Meals on Wheels; 1977 Joetta Cramm, Grassroots; 1976 Christian Women’s Thrift Shop; 1975: Nancy Wiggins.

All these terrific people are reminders that members of the Howard County Community have a long and distinguished tradition of community service.

This year as we celebrate NAMI of Howard County (Volunteer Team of the Year); Donna Wells, Employee of the Year, Kathy Dugan, Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.) and our special Lifetime Achievement Award to Susan Rosenbaum.

The Audrey Robbins luncheon is always a great time not only to celebrate people who've made a huge difference to the community, but also to visit with old friends.  Many of our past winners will be joining us this year in honor of the Award's 35th Anniversary. To get tickets go to:  www.acshoco.org.

An impressive number of nominations came in for this year’s Audrey Robbins Humanitarian Awards -- significantly more than even last year -- which was a very good year.  I'd like to think it's because the 35th Anniversary is coming -- but we also have a lot of terrific people in Howard County. The Awards are being presented June 16.  Winners will be selected next week -- and announced a bit after that.

We’re at week 7 highlighting our 70 past Awardees.  Share your stories of them.  Are you an honoree? Share what it meant to you.

35 Years of Awardees.  So many remarkable people.

It's week four of our plan to remember the past Audrey Robbins honorees.  Only 2 weeks til nominations close (May 7) for this year.  I noticed that this week's nominees (like many of the past 3) are people still making a major difference in our community. Hope you'll pass on to them that you saw this -- and share a memory of what makes them special.  If you're the honoree -- we'd really appreciate hearing from you, too.

Hearing that what we do is valued, appreciated, and can make a difference is very rewarding.  We received the comments below from Frank Turban in response to our last Audrey Robbins posting and with permission are passing them along.

Thank you for honoring me again for this... The Volunteer of the Year meant everything to me. It gave me the confidence to know that I was on the right track in doing my life's work. Since, I have retired from the State of Maryland as a probation officer due to the  worsening of my Multiple Sclerosis. I was able to take over the manager's job at the Serenity Center to get their fiscal needs in order and to give guidance to the Board of Directors on fiscal issues. When the Sherriff's Deprartment let go of the Court Ordered Community Service Program in 2009, the ACS award gave me the confidence to contact the County Executive and propose that I head it up under the umbrella of the Serenity Center. I coordinated obtaining the State Grant for Community Services and meshing it with the Serenity Center's mission of outreach. After receiving the grant, I hired and trained two people to do the job. We were up and running just three months after inception. As of 1 September, 2009 Howard County Community Service @ The Serenity Center was born. After just eight months coordination with the courts, bringing 17 non-profits and state agencies back under contract, and maintaining good service to all I was able to transfer the Directorship to Malcolm "Chip" Thomas to continue what was set in place and make any improvements necessary to accomplish the mission. I have been blessed with a life that I am proud of and a legacy of WHAT NOW !!   Thanks again for ACS doing the work of service to our community.

Week 3 of our 10 weeks highlighting our 70 Audrey Robbins Awardees. This is the award’s 35th year.  The Audrey Robbins  Humanitarian Awards are June 16. Nominations  for this year’s humanitarians close May 7.  Share your stories.  Are you an honoree? Share what it meant to you. This week we remember: Carole Ball, Nora Scanlan, Nancy Wentworth and the late Eleanor Blevins, Volunteer Team; Murray Simon, Volunteer of the Year (2005); Di Li, Nina Zhang, Lovy Kim, Sueah Lee, Team;  Karl (Frank) Turban, Volunteer of the Year;  Carol Beatty, Employee of the Year; (2004)

We also heard back from the Police Department on our week 1 posting noting the The Howard County Police Department Domestic Violence Unit

The following is a quote on what the award, as well as the assignment in the Domestic Violence Unit has meant to Cpl Molly Gale. Molly is the longest tenured member of the Section, and has been with the Unit since it was formed:

When the Domestic Violence Section was first implemented back in 2006, we did not realize just how much of a difference we would make in both the community and the department.  However, we knew as a team that we had a passion for this type of work and being able to help victims transition into survivors was a reward within itself.  When our section was notified that we were receiving the Audrey Robbins’ Award, it was a very humbling experience to know that the citizens we work to serve and protect recognize our efforts to help end Domestic Violence.
